Shaun Chen 陈志浩 Chen Zhihao
A police inspector in the CID, famed for his quick logical mind. Serious when at work and witty when at rest, he is well-liked by supervisors and colleagues alike. However, his tendency to keep to himself has been transformed into an image of an enigmatic and aloof superior, something like an ice sculpture to be admired from afar. His parents have both passed away, along with his wife, thus his sole family member is his son – Sifeng.

Fann Wong 李玉敏 Li Yumin
The owner of Mystery PI (谜底探所). Mystery PI is the labour of love done with her mystery-loving husband, Yijie. After his untimely death, she has had to work hard to raise their daughter, Kexin, as well as keep Mystery PI running. She has since retired, leaving the actual running of operations to her daughter, although she does chip in to offer her opinions whenever required. A strong individual, but one who has become weary after going through the trials of life.

Yvonne Lim 方 恪心 Fang Kexin
The daughter of Fang Yijie and Li Yumin, and current Operations Manager of Mystery PI. She is bubbly and mischievious, but is also capable of taking responsibility when required. Her father’s passing has led her to become extremely close to her mother, and she also has friends in Shen Lique and Yi Xiang. What they do not know is that she remains to this day haunted by the circumstances of Yijie’s death, which she has never revealed to anyone.

Qi Yuwu 马凯杰 Ma Kaijie
A member of the CID force. He is close friends with Zhihao, as well as being part of Zhihao’s team in the police force. A natural charmer with an instinct for danger, he is usually the one who interviews suspects. Unlike his superior, Kaijie is very personable and gets along very well with all of his colleagues. His family is relatively well-off; and he has a crush on Cold Case Department’s Jiehui.

Jeanette Aw 文洁惠 Wen Jiehui
Officer-in-charge of the Cold Case Department in CID. She is a quiet and reserved girl, but very capable with regards to her work. Not much is known about her history, except that she has an elder sister, Jieqing, and chose to be in this department because she has been trying to solve a particular mystery for years. Her cold demeanor has led to comparisons with Zhihao, and she herself has often thought of him as a companionable soul, if not soul mate.

Dai Yangtian 郑德龙 Zheng Delong
The latest recruit to CID is both hot-headed and brash. However, he has the talent of being extremely observant, even if prone to jump to the wrong conclusions at times. He views Kaijie as an idol of sorts and tries to emulate him, and is put off by what he deems to be Zhihao’s stuck-up behaviour. Deep inside, he has a strong sense of righteousness, probably due to what he perceives to be his mother’s biasedness to his wayward younger brother, Dehu.

Felicia Chin 沈丽雀 Shen Lique
A close friend of Kexin’s and an investigator at Mystery PI. She is vivacious and appealing, yet can also be haughty to those she deems unworthy of her attention. She is rich due to the family business pertaining to jewellery, so she treats her job at Mystery PI as a hobby of sorts, as well as to accompany Kexin. Yet under her carefree attitude is a girl deeply scarred by family secrets and fighting with two elder sisters for her parents’ attention.

Zzen Zhang 易翔  Yi Xiang
A close friend of Kexin’s and an investigator at Mystery PI. He is extremely earnest and friendly, gladly offering to help anyone and everyone. Due to his high society family, he is relatively sheltered, causing both Kexin and Lique to worry that he may be cheated. Although gullible, he is fiercely loyal to his loved ones which makes them protective of him in return. He has liked Lique ever since young, although she has never made her intentions clear in return.

Side Cast:

Yumin’s husband and Kexin’s father. He died mysteriously when Kexin was just seven years old.

Kyle Chan 陈 思风 Chen Sifeng
Zhihao’s son with his former wife, who had passed away due to a lingering illness.

A senior member of Zhihao’s CID team. He is better known as Ahmeng (阿盟).

Vivian Lai 潘晓薇 Pan Xiaowei
A member of Zhihao’s CID team. She is better known as Xiaowei (小薇).

Jessica Liu 文洁情 Wen Jieqing
Jiehui’s elder sister. She tends to daydream, and works as a waitress at a restaurant near her home due to her lack of qualifications.

Andie Chen 郑德虎 Zheng Dehu
Delong’s younger brother. His family claims that he is waiting for his university application results, but in actual fact, he is a member of a triad.

Constance Song 沈丽雕 Shen Lidiao
Lique’s second sister. She is the marketing manager of the family jewellery business.

Pan Lingling 沈 丽凤 Shen Lifeng
Lique’s eldest sister. She has been disowned by her family for getting pregnant before marriage.

Storyline:
Ever since young, Yumin (Fann) has always loved solving mysteries. Having finally set up her own private investigation company with her husband Yijie’s (Christopher) help, she looked forward to solving mysteries as a lifelong endeavour. Yijie’s death changed all that though, as mystery-solving became just another job to support herself and her daughter, Kexin.

Twenty years later, it is Kexin’s (Yvonne) turn to run Mystery PI. With Lique (Felicia) and Yi Xiang (Zzen) helping out, business is smooth sailing, although the multiple adultery cases has become something of a bore. When a typical case turns out to be something much more, Kexin has to join forces with Zhihao (Shaun), Kaijie (Yuwu) and arch-enemy Delong (Yangtian) of CID to catch the criminal. Will Mystery PI’s unorthodox methods of crime-solving be accepted by the CID? And when relationships develop and deteriorate, while dark family secrets hidden under the basement are revealed, will these youngsters survive the trials that Mystery Case Files bring?

CASE I. 双子座 (Ep1-3)

Kexin is tracking a woman suspected of adultery. The trail leads her to a hotel, where she lies in wait. However, the woman does not appear, causing her to investigate the room where she discovers the woman’s dead body. Zhihao also appears on the scene, as it turns out that a crime of passion may have taken place. All is not as it seems, as the possibility of a twin sister emerges, making everything all the more complicated.

II. 奇狗传 (Ep3-7)

Liegou is a lackey for a triad dealing with drugs. When his body is discovered severed in the woods and seemingly embalmed, it is up to Zhihao and Kexin to find out whether it is a gang war gone wrong, or a drug deal done right.

III. 灰姑娘 (Ep8-10)

The step-daughter of a rich diamond heiress is kidnapped, with the ransom note demanding 10 000 dollars worth of diamonds by midnight for the young girl’s life. When the trade is completed, the girl is discovered to be disturbed and so the police is called in. Only then do they discover that the kidnapper has more tricks in store for Zhihao and Kexin.

IV. 伊甸园 (Ep11-13)

Huiqi has her garden redesigned to better suit her feng shui, and calls in the services of famous garden artist Michael. Zhihao and Kexin are invited for the new garden’s opening. The garden’s construction does not proceed smoothly, however, and when the body of a beautiful woman is uncovered in Huiqi’s backyard, it calls into question what is worth sacrificing for the sake of art.

V. 反方向 (Ep13-16)

A girl has recently come into her inheritence, only to discover that her extended family has been hiding a secret – her parents had not died in a car accident, but in a murder-suicide case. She refuses to believe her mother capable of such a monstrous act, and so calls in the services of Kexin (and therefore also Zhihao and the department) to prove it.

VI. 游乐园 (Ep16-18)

Three seemingly random murders occur, the sole common point being that they all happened near a pasar malaam. Zhihao is tasked to look into this case before the serial murderer finds a next victim.

VII. 镜中人 (Ep18-21)

The previous case triggers Kexin’s memories of her father’s death, making her all the more determined to find his murderer. Overwork seemingly causes her to have a mental breakdown which ultimately led to cutting her wrists, but Zhihao knows that nothing is that simple. Together with Yumin, they seek to discover her hints before the track grows cold.

VIII. 意难忘 (ep22-24)

Delong has long been estrangled with his younger brother Dehu. Yet Dehu’s death still comes as a blow, especially when added to his lack of promotion despite Zhihao’s resignation after Kexin’s death. Instead Kaijie is promoted. Once again the police and the agency join forces to discover the reasons behind Dehu’s betrayal of his gang and his subsequent murder.

IX. 一夜情 (Ep25-27)

Lique receives a call from her sister Lifeng to report that her daughter Ziyan is missing. Zhihao and Yumin now have to find the missing girl, as well as investigate into Jiguang’s mysterious death and Lique’s dark family secrets.

With enough evidence to convict her, Zhihao and Yumin go after Lidiao, only to discover that she has apparently gone mad. Now they must find out if destroying her sister’s life is Lidiao’s personal vendetta to get even, or if there is a mastermind behind the manipulations to ruin Lifeng’s life.

XI. 野狼人 (Ep31-33)

Ahmeng has been neglecting his job of late, with frequent visits to pubs and bars causing the rest of Kaijie’s department to worry for him. He finally turns to Zhihao and Delong with his problems – threats, blackmail and a drug addiction he has been unable to get rid of. The solution lies in solving the root of the problem – how did teetotaler Ahmeng get addicted to drugs in the first place?

XII. 人情债 (Ep33-37)

There is a mole in the police and so Delong and the department is tied down. Zhihao and Yumin suspect Kaijie although there is nothing to detract from his ‘perfect’ image, save for his persistant yet unsuccessful wooing of Jiehui, who is interested in Zhihao. A chance slip from Jiehui’s petulant sister Jieqing, however, provides a vital clue.

XIII. 红楼梦 (Ep37-40)

With Kaijie under custody, Delong is given free reign to search for the mastermind. Zhihao accidentally comes across the last hint from Kexin, and now it is up to Yumin to use her memories to discover what hidden secrets lay in Yijie’s past that necessitated the series of murders in the first place.
